Sister building to The Shard and designed with the same ambitious architectural DNA, the award-winning News Building on the Thames’ Southbank is the UK HQ to News International and brings some of the world’s most eminent media brands to London Bridge Quarter including the Dow Jones, The Wall Street Journal, The Times, and Harper Collins. As well as one of London’s largest commercial roof terraces, with this building we have created 430,000 sq ft of modern, efficient commercial space over 17 floors.

THE APPROACH
Forward thinking in its technology and sustainability
Initially known as ‘The Place’, and then often referred to as the ‘Baby Shard’, the News Building sits on one of London’s largest transport hubs and forms an integral part of Shard Quarter. At its base, we have created a new public piazza, a new station concourse and bus station and underground retail centre. Forward thinking in its technology and sustainability, our aim was to provide a superb work environment to its fast-paced, demanding tenants.

THE DESIGN
Designed with flexibility in mind.
Renzo Piano Building Workshop designed the building with flexibility in mind, in order to meet the most rigorous demands of modern media organisations during an age of accelerating digital change.
A top priority was minimising the building’s environmental footprint – in construction as well as in use – and creating a highly attractive place to work. A series of large, light, open and highly flexible spaces is characterised by 360 degree full-height triple-glazed cladding panels. This interactive wall system made up of 216,400 sq ft double skin façade guarantees the highest level of thermal and acoustic insulation along with plenty of natural light.
Building above the operational tube lines presented key challenges that informed the building’s architecture and engineering – in some instances we were constructing in extremely close proximity to the vent shafts and tunnels, meaning the monitoring systems needed to track the tiniest movement and risk were critical. The solution required a building that cantilevered significantly over the site – a major feat of collaboration and engineering.
