Project overview

This three-storey office development occupies a unique position above the exit of London Bridge Underground station. The previously disused site on Borough High Street has been transformed into a dynamic, modern office building for London Underground Limited.

The building’s statement façade subtly references the scale and rhythm of the architecture in the surrounding conservation area. Discrete decoration applied to the windows creates a modern interpretation of the area’s use of Portland stone and takes cues from motifs found in neighbouring buildings.

Project history

As part of the wider London Bridge Quarter scheme, a requirement was presented to relocate a small Station Master’s office from London Bridge Street. Sellar identified an appropriate new site in the form of a redundant void above the new London Bridge Underground station exit. Sellar appointed Hawkins Brown, an architectural practice with an intricate knowledge and understanding of the Southwark area. The studio designed a contemporary insertion to restore scale and cohesion to the surrounding architecture.
